Theresa Joan Berens

Theresa Joan Berens ARIZONA
Theresa Joan Berens, 17, of Scottsdale, investigated the role of the Fn14 gene in the migration of malignant cells from gliomas (tumors of non-neurological cells in the central nervous system) for her Intel Science Talent Search project in biochemistry. Through preparative, analytical and interpretive procedures on tissue culture and RNA extracted from these tumors, she identified an over-expression of Fn14 in migrating tumor cells as compared to relatively stationary ones, and in brain tumor cells as compared to normal brain cells. She believes this gene is a glioma marker that may be useful in cancer diagnostics, and may ultimately have therapeutic application as well. Theresa conducted her research at the Barrow Neurological Institute, where she participates in the Scientific Enrichment Program for Students. She is first in her class of ten at the Humanities and Sciences Institute in Phoenix and past president of the theology club. Her academic honors include the President's Award for Excellence, University of Arizona. A rock climber, snow skier and flamenco dancer, Theresa is the daughter of Matthew and Eileen Berens. She hopes to continue her studies at Harvard.
