Allegra Elizabeth Giovine NEW YORK
Allegra Elizabeth Giovine, 18, of Plandome, focused on education for her Intel Science Talent Search project in behavioral and social sciences, exploring differences in behavior when women compete with other women versus when they compete with men. In her experiment, college students in a basic level English course were placed in pairs and then asked to estimate their performance on a test they had just completed. While women in general underestimated their scores more than men did, women paired with other women underestimated their scores significantly more, and women paired with men overestimated their scores significantly more. Allegra believes the implication of her experiment -- that women are more inclined to compete with men than with other women -- is a reason to reassess same-gender versus mixed-gender education. At Manhasset High School, Allegra is active in student government and is a yearbook editor. She plays clarinet with the school orchestra and its wind ensemble, and she was a Long Island Math Fair Gold and Bronze Medalist. The daughter of Edward and Dr. Maria Giovine, she hopes to attend Princeton.
