61st Annual STS (20012002)
Finalists
Angela Soeun Kim
NEW YORK
Angela Soeun Kim, 18, of New Hyde Park, studied the relationship between
breast cancer and HIV for her Intel Science Talent Search medicine and health
project. Her work, conducted at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, focused
on how HIV-1 impacts estrogen receptor (ER) signaling. Angela also studied the
combined impact of
HIV-1 and excessive intake of alcohol on ER transcription signaling. Because
these receptors play a significant role in the response of breast cancer cells
to endocrine therapy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, Angela's work could lay the
groundwork for new breast cancer treatments. At Great Neck South High School,
Angela is an accomplished pianist, flute section leader in the symphonic band,
coach of the math team, Latin editor of the foreign language magazine and
treasurer of the Asian Cultural Society. For two years she has taught the Korean
Hourglass Drum Dance to fellow students and performs the dance for elementary
school students and college audiences. The daughter of Yong-Bae and Dong-Hwang
Kim, Angela hopes to study biology or business at MIT in preparation for a
career as a research scientist or businesswoman.
